Un relato narrado en primera persona por un hombre que desde su más tierna infancia se ha visto obligado a viajar por toda la península, desde los espacios más hostiles de la España profunda, hasta grandes ciudades como Madrid o Barcelona, tratando de encontrar respuestas sobre sus orígenes (fue prácticamente abandonado por sus padres), sobre el comportamiento de quienes le rodean (familiares extraños, gente de pueblo, mujeres oscuras), e incluso sobre su propia vida destartalada. Poco más sabemos de Rafael Sender Romeo, un autor esquivo al ojo público y con tendencia a la invisibilidad. En 1971 Tusquets publicó su novela Jolly Rogers, hoy prácticamente inencontrable, que había escrito a los diecinueve años.
